Girona is one of the popular tourist spots in Spain. It gained attention especially after the making of Game of Thrones there. Girona is a perfect collage of modern and ancient architecture in the same city. When we researched the places we wanted to visit in Girona, we found that all the places that Google presented were built between the 10th and 14th centuries. So, naturally, we assumed there would be a lot of ancient architecture. When we got there, we first saw a modernly constructed railway station. Everything around us looked like they were built in the last 50 years. We made a detailed plan of the places we wanted to visit and even created a walking route using Google Maps. After walking for a kilometer from the railway station, we reached our first location, “Muralles de Girona”, a long stretch of walls built during the 14th century as part of the fortress built during that era. After reaching there, we realised that all the places we planned to visit are inside this massive fortress. The places we visited and the walking route to reach those locations are added here. Some episodes of Game of Thrones were shot in Pujada de Sant Domènec. It is the location of a beautiful church with many stairs leading to a small garden nearby. If you travel at the right time of the year (we travelled during March), you can find some orange trees to pick oranges from. There was also a small cafe and some souvenir shops near the church.
If you keep walking through the fortress's paths, you can find “Carrer de la Muralla,” which was also built during the 14th century to strengthen the fortress's infrastructure and safeguard the people living there.
There is Banys Àrabs inside the fortress, which served as the bathing place for people who lived there. The first mention of such baths in Girona was in the 11th century, but in the 12th century, it was partially destroyed during a siege and was rebuilt again in the 13th century. The interesting part of these baths is that it was constructed with so much engineering precision that the heat generated in one section is transported across all the other sections with incredible efficiency. Another interesting thing about these baths is that a very similar concept was also used in other parts of the world around the same period, but without any knowledge transfer between those areas. This makes us think the people in that era who lived in different parts of the world had similar ideas around the same period of time. For people interested in a short trek in Girona, Muntanya de la O is a great option. It is a relatively small mountain trek which allows you to explore the tracks of nature and Girona.
